Psychiatry of Old Age (or Psycho-geriatrics)

Anteris is pleased to be able to offer the service of specialists in the Psychiatry of Old Age.

Psychiatrists specialising in treating patients over the age of 65 years require additional subspecialty training in the psychiatry of old age.

With advancing age, some mental health conditions become more or less common. As with other forms of mental health care, the goal of psychiatrists working in the realm of psychogeriatrics is to improve function, emotional wellbeing, behaviour and quality of life.

The diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions in older adults requires thorough assessment, including mental state examination, history, review of medications, and sometimes cognitive testing, neurological examination, and medical imaging, as well as an understanding of the particular challenges faced by people this age group.

Psychiatrists and Psycho-geriatricians also have certain medico-legal skills. They are often consulted to determine whether someone has mental capacity to make an important decision including writing or revising a will; appointing or revoking Enduring Powers of Attorney.
